Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune disorder that can cause hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid. Rarely, the disease can cause hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid. Thyroid hormones control how your body uses energy, so they affect nearly every organ in your body—even the way your heart beats.
That's why a normal TSH almost always means the thyroid gland is healthy and producing enough thyroid hormones. While a simple TSH blood test is a very accurate way to screen for hypothyroidism, an elevated TSH alone may not be enough to confirm the diagnosis.

Secondary –Problem with another gland interferes activity of thyroid gland. For example, hormone produced by pituitary gland triggers the production of thyroid hormone. So, if any problem happens with pituitary gland it affects thyroid hormone production.
