The cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) and the cyclic vomiting syndrome in adults (CVS) are both characterized by recurrent episodes of heavy nausea, vomiting and frequently abdominal pain. Both syndromes are barely known among physicians.
Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is a condition caused by long-term cannabis (marijuana) use. People who have CHS experience reoccurring episodes of nausea, vomiting, dehydration and abdominal pain, with frequent visits to the emergency department. Hyperemesis means severe vomiting.

Symptoms of Cannabinoid Hyperemesis SyndromeMorning sickness.A fear of throwing up.Intense abdominal discomfort or pain.Persistent nausea.Repeated vomiting and retching (i.e., making the sound and movement of vomiting).Loss of appetite.Weight loss.
Once the nausea and vomiting subside, usually within 48 hours, the patient enters the recovery phase. Recovery may range from days to months and is associated with cessation of cannabis use. If the patient reinitiates cannabis, symptoms usually return.
Research suggests that CHS is a permanent condition that can only be effectively treated by quitting cannabis. Continuing to use cannabis despite CHS can lead to potentially life threatening complications.
There is no cure for CHS. If your healthcare provider has diagnosed you with CHS, treatment will include medications to help manage your symptoms, but the only way to prevent future episodes of nausea and vomiting is to stop using cannabis.

Code T40.7X1A, Poisoning by cannabis (derivatives), accidental (unintentional), initial encounter, is not appropriate. The condition is not classified as an acute poisoning, since it is caused by heavy chronic marijuana use, not by a single use.
