Overview. Type 1.5 diabetes, also called latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), is a condition that shares characteristics of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. LADA is diagnosed during adulthood, and it sets in gradually, like type 2 diabetes.

You may sometimes hear people call LADA by its unofficial name -- "type 1.5 diabetes." Like type 1 diabetes, LADA happens because your body makes antibodies that cause the immune system -- your body's defense against germs -- to attack the insulin-making cells of your pancreas.
As a form of type 1 diabetes, LADA is the result of your immune system attacking the beta cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. The only difference is that this attack is slower which means your insulin production declines at a more slower rate compared to type 1—but a much faster rate compared to type 2.

Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) is a slow-progressing form of autoimmune diabetes. Like the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes, LADA occurs because your pancreas stops producing adequate insulin, most likely from some "insult" that slowly damages the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
Researchers have discovered several genetic regions that can increase the risk of type 1.5 diabetes. There are different sets of variants associated with type 1, type 1.5, and type 2 diabetes. This indicates that the risk of type 1.5 diabetes is genetically linked.
Age 30–50 years. We tend to consider LADA in people over the age of 30 years simply because below this age type 1 diabetes is more likely, and in LADA we are specifically considering diabetes of adult onset.

Conclusions/interpretation: Overweight/obesity is associated with increased risk of LADA, particularly when in combination with FHD. These findings support the hypothesis that, even in the presence of autoimmunity, factors linked to insulin resistance, such as excessive weight, could promote onset of diabetes.

Type 1.5 Diabetes (T1.5D) is also known as Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults (LADA). LADA is considered by some experts to be a slowly progressive form of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) while other experts in the field consider it a separate form of Diabetes. LADA or T1.5D is sometimes thought of as T1D that is diagnosed in adults over the age of 30—T1D is commonly diagnosed in children and younger adults. T1.5D is often found along with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D): up to 25% of individuals with T1.5D also have characteristics of T2D.1 This is sometimes called “double diabetes”. Individuals with T1.5D are all eventually dependent on insulin for treatment, and have a very high risk of requiring insulin within months or years (up to six years) after the initial diagnosis. This is in contrast to people with T1D—these people tend to need insulin within days or weeks of diagnosis.2 Individuals diagnosed with T2D relatively rarely require insulin treatment. Current recommendations are to treat individuals with T1.5D immediately with insulin, though this is not universally accepted (see below). The Causes of T1.5D Just as with other forms of diabetes, we don’t truly understand the underlying cause (s) of T1.5D. For years, we have had terminology dividing diabetes into subgroups: there’s “type 1” and “type 2” diabetes (type 1 is autoimmune diabetes with positive antibodies, typically showing up in children or teenagers, previously called IDDM or childhood-onset diabetes) (type 2 is insulin-resistant diabetes showing up in obese adults, whose antibody tests are negative, previously called NIDDM or adult-onset diabetes). There are other subgroups, but somehow these other varieties of diabetes didn’t get their own numbers when the naming conventions were invented: there’s “gestational diabetes” (diabetes first diagnosed during pregancy) and “secondary diabetes” (diabetes due to some other condition, such as thyroid disorders). And there’s another another type of diabetes, sometimes called LADA, that doesn’t fit cleanly into either the type 1 or type 2 categories. People with LADA are diagnosed with what initially appears to be type 2 diabetes, and then rapidly progress to insulin-dependency. If diabetes antibodies (including “islet cell antibodies” and “GAD antibodies”) are measured, they’re positive, which is usually considered a hallmark of type 1 diabetes.
