General Information. Klebsiella [kleb−see−ell−uh] is a type of Gram-negative bacteria that can cause different types of healthcare-associated infections, including pneumonia, bloodstream infections, wound or surgical site infections, and meningitis.
Klebsiella pneumoniae is second to Escherichia coli the most common gram-negative pathogen associated with a wide spectrum of infections, such as urinary tract infection (UTI), pneumonia, intra-abdominal infection, bloodstream infection (BSI), meningitis and pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) [1–4].
ESBLs are most commonly detected in Klebsiella pneumoniae, which is an opportunistic pathogen associated with severe infections in hospitalized patients, including immunocompromised hosts with severe underlying diseases2.
