Our ICD-10 cheat sheet will help you to submit claims faster and with greater accuracy. This is a preliminary list of common ICD-10 codes for chiropractic diagnoses. This is a common code list to be used as a guide for coding and is not intended to represent all ICD-10 codes accepted by a Payer.
For instance, a medical provider refers a patient to a chiropractor for care; once care is completed with the chiropractor and the patient is being "checked" out by the medical provider, that constitutes the subsequent encounter.
Using valid ICD-10 codes can facilitate authorization, claims payments and support the medical necessity of the service in case of review, audits or litigation. Codes must support neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) conditions, and represent the body regions requiring treatment.
10 ICD 10- What a Chiropractor Needs to Know Five and Six character codes provide even greater specificity or additional information about the condition being coded. Similar to ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM codes must be used to the highest number of characters available or to the highest level of specificity.
If you need to look up the ICD code for a particular diagnosis or confirm what an ICD code stands for, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website to use their searchable database of the current ICD-10 codes.
Here are three steps to ensure you select the proper ICD-10 codes:Step 1: Find the condition in the alphabetic index. Begin the process by looking for the main term in the alphabetic index. ... Step 2: Verify the code and identify the highest specificity. ... Step 3: Review the chapter-specific coding guidelines.

This leaves you vulnerable to payers who will question the location of your patient’s myalgia. The most common code chiropractors will use is M79.12, which identifies and involves the muscle of the neck and head.
For clarification, while the newest code is named ICD-10 2019, the codes actually went into effect on October 1, 2018. The good news is that the list of code changes aren’t as extensive as in years before.
Fibromyalgia is still a valid code at M79 .7. The Myositis series (M60.0-M60.9) are separate and distinct from Myalgia. Using either of these other codes are both still an option, but they should not be used in conjunction with Myalgia.
