Flagyl (metronidazole) is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections of the vagina, stomach, liver, skin, joints, brain and spinal cord, lungs, heart, or bloodstream. Flagyl is also used to treat trichomoniasis , a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite.
Unfortunately, like most antibiotics, it produces side effects. The most common are upset stomach and diarrhea, but it can also cause a yeast infection. While killing the bacteria that cause infections, Flagyl also kills friendly bacteria in your body, called probiotics.
Metronidazole is not designed to treat UTI, but it sometimes prescribed for nongonococcal urethritis. It is important to report any side effects of Metronidazole, especially serious ones like fever. Patients recovering from a urinary tract infection should drink plenty of water. The presence of a urinary tract infection may cause fever in infants.
