Medicare Part B covers Pap smears and pelvic exams as preventative services for cervical and vaginal cancers. Medicare pays for these Pap smears for as long as you and your doctor determine that they are necessary. Under Medicare, you are covered for a Pap smear once every 24 months.
Atypical glandular cells are simply cells that do not look normal on the Pap smear. They are often called “atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance.” Glandular cells are found in the thin tissue layer making up the cervix's inner canal, as well as in the uterus.
Do atypical glandular cells mean cancer? Not necessarily. There are many reasons why glandular cells can become atypical including cancer, infection, inflammation, pregnancy, or previous radiation to the cervix or endometrium.
