The current code, M54. 5 (Low back pain), will be expanded into three more specific codes: M54. 50 (Low back pain, unspecified)
The new diagnosis code – M54. 51 – went into effect on October 1, 2021. This code will be applied to patients meeting indications for treatment with basivertebral nerve radiofrequency neurotomy.
M54. 59, other low back pain is used for lower back pain that can be attributed to a specific reason but there is not an applicable code available that describes or defines it. (You can name it but it is does not have its own specific code (i.e. facet syndrome.)
For starters, dorsalgia is severe back pain, which could be coming from different parts of the spine. Depending on the specific section of the spine where the pain is coming from, there are six types of dorsalgia.
The most common cause of thoracic back pain is inflammation of the muscles or soft tissues of the thoracic spine. This inflammation can occur for a number of reasons: A sudden sprain or strain (as in car accidents or sports injuries). Sitting or standing in a slouched position over time.
M54. 6 is a billable/specific ICD-10-CM code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis for reimbursement purposes. The 2022 edition of ICD-10-CM M54. 6 became effective on October 1, 2021.

The costovertebral joint is a true joint; it is susceptible to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter’s syndrome, and, in particular, ankylosing spondylitis. The joint is often traumatized during acceleration-deceleration injuries and blunt trauma to the chest; with severe trauma, the joint may subluxate or dislocate.
The costovertebral joint is a true joint; it is susceptible to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter’s syndrome, and, in particular, ankylosing spondylitis ( Figs. 70.1 and 70.2 ).
On physical examination, patients attempt to splint the affected joint or joints by avoiding flexion, extension, and lateral bending of the spine; they may also retract the scapulae in an effort to relieve the pain. The costovertebral joint may be tender to palpation and feel hot and swollen if it is acutely inflamed.
A benign inflammation of one or more of the costal cartilages. Idiopathic painful nonsuppurative swellings of one or more costal cartilages, especially of the second rib. The anterior chest pain may mimic that of coronary artery disease. (Dorland, 27th ed.)
The 2022 edition of ICD-10-CM M94.0 became effective on October 1, 2021.
Next to the entry for “Pain, abdominal,” there is the code R10.9 Unspecified abdominal pain. If “flank pain” is all you have to work with from the documentation, then R10.9 is the code to use. But if there is additional documentation that supports a more specific code under abdominal pain, you should choose that code instead. For instance, if further questioning helps the doctor determine the pain is in the upper right abdomen, you’ll use R10.11 Right upper quadrant pain.
As a sign or symptom, pain is subject to the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for coding signs and symptoms. The general rule for physician coding is that you should use a code describing a symptom or sign “when a related definitive diagnosis has not been established (confirmed) by the provider,” the Official Guidelines state.
