Abstract

Antibiotic treatment failure is common among patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) who are managed in the outpatient setting and is associated with higher mortality and increased health care costs.

METHODS

A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted using the Truven Health Marketscan Commercial Claims and Encounters Database and Medicare Supplemental and Coordination Benefits Database for the period 2011–2015. The database contains >40 million individuals including >4 million Medicare patients.

RESULTS

From a total of 890 784 patient charts reviewed, 257 165 (28.9%) adults (aged ≥18 years) met the criteria described above. The reasons for attrition of cases are shown in Table 1. The mean age of the study population (SD) was 52.2 (17.39) years, with 20.9% being aged ≥65 years. Overall 46.4% were male.

DISCUSSION

This retrospective analysis of a large-community commercial health care database offers important insights into the outcomes of adult patients with CAP who received their initial care in the outpatient setting.
