The homocysteine blood test helps diagnose B6 and B12 Deficiency, as well as, a Folate Deficiency. It is also used to identify patients who may be at risk for heart disease and/or strokes. Patients are advised to fast for 8-10 hours prior to the homocysteine blood test. Results are available in one to two days.
Homocysteine is an amino acid that the body produces by breaking down dietary proteins. Having high levels of homocysteine can damage blood vessels and lead to blood clots. People who have high homocysteine levels tend to have low levels of vitamin B12.
Collection Instructions Red-top tube (no gel): Place the specimen in the refrigerator or ice bath for 30 minutes after collection. Centrifuge the specimen as soon as possible after complete clot formation. Transfer the serum to a plastic specimen transport tube.
