Overview. Prostate gland hypertrophy (enlargement) is a common medical problem in men over 50. The prostate begins to grow after the age of 25. As the prostate enlarges, it presses on the bladder and the urethra, obstructing the flow of urine and causing discomfort.
Sialadenosis is a typically bilateral noninflammatory hypertrophy of the submandibular glands, having its origin in metabolic disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and diabetes. Other clinical conditions associated with a high sialadenosis incidence are alcoholism and non‐alcoholic cirrhosis.
Benign hypertrophy of the salivary glands can occur in patients with anorexia nervosa. This enlargement has been related to nutri- tional deficiencies and bulimia, which is a form of episodic binge eating followed by vomiting.

Submandibular sialadenitis is inflammation of the submandibular gland, which is caused by salivary stasis that leads to retrograde seeding of bacteria from the oral cavity. Sialadenosis is a benign,non-inflammatory swelling of salivary glands usually associated with metabolic conditions.
Viral infections such as mumps, flu, Coxsackie viruses, echovirus and cytomegalovirus can make the salivary glands enlarge. Cysts can develop in the salivary glands after injuries, infections, stones or tumors.
Sialadenitis is usually first treated with an antibiotic. You will also be advised of other treatments to help with the pain and increased saliva flow. These include drinking lemon juice or sucking hard candy, using warm compresses, and gland massages.
In cases of decreased production of saliva, simply sucking sour hard candy may clear the ducts of any small stone-like blockages. For HIV patients, one of the most effective treatments is low dose radiation which can shrink the parotid gland back to a more normal size.
Parotid hypertrophy itself is not dangerous. It is, however, crucial to treat the underlying issue of bulimia. The body is not able to sustain the damage caused by the disease and eventually dehydration and malnutrition cause complications in different organ systems. It is ultimately fatal if not treated.
The parotid glands are two salivary glands that sit just in front of the ears on each side of the face. Salivary glands produce saliva to aid in chewing and digesting food. There are many salivary glands in the lips, cheeks, mouth and throat.
The submandibular gland is the second largest of the three main salivary glands, which also include the parotid and sublingual glands. The submandibular glands are paired major salivary glands that lie in the submandibular triangle.
Nonmalignant swelling may be caused by mumps, sialadenitis, Sjögren syndrome, cysts and infections. Submandibular lymphadenopathy may also result from infections of teeth, upper respiratory track, sinuses and tonsils or infections mononucleosis and cut scratch disease.
Usually, botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A, Botox; Allergan Inc. Irvine, California) can be injected in the submandibular gland to treat sialorrhea. BTX-A is effective and known to provide effective volume reduction as a side effect.

Treatment for salivary gland enlargement varies considerably depending of the cause. For infection related blockages, antibiotics are effective. In cases of decreased production of saliva, simply sucking sour hard candy may clear the ducts of any small stone-like blockages.
Saliva also keeps the mouth clean and healthy because it contains antibodies that kill germs. If the salivary glands are damaged or aren't producing enough saliva it can affect taste, make chewing and swallowing more difficult, and increase the risk for cavities, tooth loss, and infections in the mouth.

This is the official exact match mapping between ICD9 and ICD10, as provided by the General Equivalency mapping crosswalk. This means that in all cases where the ICD9 code 527.1 was previously used, K11.1 is the appropriate modern ICD10 code.
A benign, inflammatory, variably ulcerated, occasionally bilateral, self-healing lesion of the minor salivary glands that is often confused clinically and histologically with carcinoma. A chronic, benign, and usually painless inflammatory swelling of the lacrimal and salivary glands.
The 2022 edition of ICD-10-CM K11.8 became effective on October 1, 2021.
K11.1 is a billable diagnosis code used to specify a medical diagnosis of hypertrophy of salivary gland. The code K11.1 is valid during the fiscal year 2021 from October 01, 2020 through September 30, 2021 for the submission of HIPAA-covered transactions.
Your salivary glands are in your mouth. You have three pairs of major salivary glands and hundreds of small (minor) glands. They make saliva (spit) and empty it into your mouth through openings called ducts. Saliva makes your food moist, which helps you chew and swallow. It helps you digest your food.
