Prognosis. The fracture of a rib is usually harmless and heals without complications. In the case of a serial rib fracture (serial broken ribs, i.e. fracture of three or more ribs), the respiratory mechanics may be impaired. More rarely, a fractured rib causes an injury to the pleura, which leads to a pneumothorax (air chest).

Conclusions: Surgical treatment is a safe and effective therapy for multiple rib fractures. Our data suggested that surgical treatment can significantly shorten the patients' pain-endurance time, hospitalization time, and can reduce complication incidence.
