B82. 9 is a billable/specific ICD-10-CM code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis for reimbursement purposes. The 2022 edition of ICD-10-CM B82.
Pinworm infection, also called enterobiasis, is caused by Enterobius vermicularis, a white slender nematode with a pointed tail.
Pinworm infection (called enterobiasis or oxyuriasis) causes itching around the anus which can lead to difficulty sleeping and restlessness. Symptoms are caused by the female pinworm laying her eggs. Symptoms of pinworm infection usually are mild and some infected people have no symptoms.
Causal Agent. The nematode (roundworm) Enterobius vermicularis is widely known as the human pinworm due to the female's long, pointed tail. In some areas the common names “seatworm” and “threadworm” are used (the latter of which is sometimes also used to refer to Strongyloides stercoralis).
Parasites - Enterobiasis (also known as Pinworm Infection) Pinworm infection is caused by a small, thin, white roundworm called Enterobius vermicularis.
Pinworms in adults Adults are less likely to have pinworm infection, except for mothers of infected children. However, adult sexual partners can transfer the eggs to each other. Pinworms also may infect the vagina and urethra.
Pinworm infection is the most common type of intestinal worm infection in the United States and one of the most common worldwide.
The pinworm (species Enterobius vermicularis), also known as threadworm (in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand) or seatworm, is a parasitic worm. Enterobiasis or pinworm infection is a common, contagious, parasitic infestation found mainly in children. The disorder is spread by swallowing or inhaling the tiny eggs of the pinworm. Enterobiasis rarely causes any serious physical problems except for the main symptom, which is severe rectal itching.
Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) and Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) are two of the most common nematode infections worldwide [1]. Enterobiasis occurs in both temperate and tropical climates; it is the most common helminthic infection in the United States and Western Europe.
Causes of threadworms A threadworm infection is passed from person to person by swallowing threadworm eggs. A female threadworm can lay thousands of tiny eggs around the anus or vagina.
Affected individuals typically present with perianal itching, and diagnosis is made by observing female worms in the perianal area. Mung bean sprouts are much larger than pinworms (Figure 2); roundworms or tapeworms are much more comparable in size.
