By Ian Byram, MD. A proximal humeral fracture refers to a break involving the area surrounding the humeral head, which is commonly known as the ball of the shoulder's ball-and-socket joint. The humeral head is located at the top of the humerus (upper arm bone).
Bicondylar intraarticular fractures of the distal humerus, because of their rarity and often associated significant displacement, comminution, and osteopenia, present the orthopedist with a difficult injury to reliably treat successfully.
Transcondylar fractures of the distal humerus of the adults are extra-articular fractures in which the single transverse fracture line is usually located at the level of the condyle or below. The fracture pattern is unique, and this type of fracture occurs only in about 9% of the distal humeral fractures.
Description. It is common for the distal humerus to break into several pieces. This is called a "comminuted fracture." A distal humerus fracture occurs when there is a break anywhere within the distal region (lower end) of the humerus. The bone can crack just slightly or break into many pieces (comminuted fracture).
