How is kyphoplasty performed?

A kyphoplasty is typically performed in an inpatient setting , but can also be performed as an outpatient procedure. It is indicated in patients with vertebral compression fractures where restoration of the vertebral body height is important, most typically in the majority of acute fractures and some chronic fractures. This procedure involves placing a narrow tube that creates a path through the back into the fracture area through the pedicle of the involved vertebrae under general anesthesia. A balloon or other device such as a bone tamp is inserted through the cannula and inflated, leaving a cavity into which a cement-like material (polymethylmethacrylate) is introduced. The goal is that by inflating the balloon, the height of the vertebrae will be at least partially reestablished. The difference in kyphoplasty and an actual fracture reduction is that if a reduction is not accomplished with the kyphoplasty, the surgeon will not try again.

What is the difference between kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty?

Kyphoplasty differs from vertebroplasty in that kyphoplasty involves additional steps in an attempt to restore the collapsed vertebral body back towards its original height.

What is the procedure for a vertebroplasty?

A vertebroplasty is often performed on an outpatient basis, and is accomplished by injecting an orthopedic cement mixture into the collapsed vertebrae. A hollow needle (trocar) is passed into the vertebral bone, and a cement mixture including polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), barium powder and a solvent is injected.

What is the procedure for a vertebral compression fracture?

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are both minimally invasive surgical procedures for treating vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis, osteolysis, or less commonly, cancer where a cement-like material is injected into the collapsed bone.
