Angioplasty is a procedure used to open blocked coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease. It restores blood flow to the heart muscle without open-heart surgery. Angioplasty can be done in an emergency setting such as a heart attack.

The term "angioplasty" means using a balloon to stretch open a narrowed or blocked artery. However, most modern angioplasty procedures also involve inserting a short wire-mesh tube, called a stent, into the artery during the procedure. The stent is left in place permanently to allow blood to flow more freely.
Carotid and coronary arteries represent large vessels, often referred to as “elastic arteries” or “conducting arteries”. Both arteries transport large volumes of blood away from the left ventricle to perfuse vital organs, the brain (i.e. carotid artery) and cardiac muscle (i.e. coronary arteries).

In carotid stenting, a long, hollow tube (catheter) is threaded through the arteries to the narrowed carotid artery in the neck. A metal mesh tube (stent) is inserted into the vessel to serve as a scaffold that helps prevent the artery from narrowing again.Jul 1, 2020
