We begin with theory by defining the objective of each of these root operations: 1 Replacement: putting in or on biological or synthetic material that physically takes the place and/or function of all or a portion of a body part 2 Removal: taking out or off a device from a body part 3 Revision: Correcting to the extent possible a portion of a malfunctioning device or the position of a displaced device
During a revision procedure, a malfunctioning or displaced device is corrected. A portion of the device may be removed and replaced in a revision procedure, but a revision procedure will never involve the entire device. If the entire device is redone, the original root operation being performed should be coded.

The condition in which people possess an extra finger or toe, i.e., a supernumerary digit, is called Polydactyly. This digit may look like a small skin (nubbin), a raised bump, or sometimes a completely developed finger or toe. Often, it is small in size and not well formed.
After surgery, the child may be suggested to wear a cast or splint on his hand or foot while it heals. The surgery takes from a few minutes to a couple of hours to complete. In some cases, more than one procedure is carried out to make the hand look normal and function well.
