The term distal radius fracture is sometimes used interchangeably with the term “broken wrist.” It can also be referred to as a Colles fracture, which is a common type of distal radius fracture in which the broken portion of the radius is tilted upward.
In traumatic injuries, the distal radius breaks close to or at its joint with the carpal bones of the wrist. These fractures most often occur as the result of a fall on an outstretched wrist. It is the most common type of fracture in the arm.
A Smith's fracture is a volar displacement fracture where the fragment of the radius that has broken off projects towards the palm side of the hand, while a Colles fracture results in dorsal displacement, causing the bone fragment to bend towards the back of the hand.
