ICD-10-CM Codes Self-inflicted harm E950-E958. 9 "Suicide and self-inflicted injury".
ICD-10-CM Code for Personal history of self-harm Z91. 5.
In this article parasuicide is defined as any nonfatal, self-injurious behavior with a clear intent to cause bodily harm or death (3). Thus parasuicide includes both lethal suicide attempts and more habitual or low-lethality behaviors such as cutting or other self-mutilation. This definition is not universal.
Suicides are coded by the cause of injury. These codes are in Chapter 19 of the ICD-10-CM Code Book. The coding structure for poisoning and suffocation are very similar and include the method as well as the associated intent of the injury. Suicide by firearm is coded as a puncture wound to the organ affected.
R41. 82 Altered mental status, unspecified - ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Codes.
For example, in the National Comorbidity Study, suicide gestures were defined as “self-injury in which there is no intent to die, but instead an intent to give the appearance of a suicide attempt in order to communicate with others” (Nock & Kessler, 2006, p. 616).
Risky behaviors such as speeding or disregarding traffic laws, or abusing drugs, are considered parasuicide when the person shows total disregard for whether the actions might result in his or her death. Unsuccessful suicide attempts may also result from miscalculations in the plan.
Suicide (n.) "Deliberate killing of oneself," 1650s, from Modern Latin suicidium "suicide," from Latin sui "of oneself" (genitive of se "self"), from PIE *s(u)w-o- "one's own," from root *s(w)e- (see idiom) + -cidium "a killing," from caedere "to slay" (from PIE root *kae-id- "to strike").
Self-injurious behavior (SIB), displayed by individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities, involves the occurrence of behavior that results in physical injury to one's own body. Common forms of SIB include, but are not limited to, head-hitting, head-banging and hand-biting.
