A single code from category Y99 should be used in conjunction with the external cause code (s) assigned to a record to indicate the status of the person at the time the event occurred. The following category is for use, when relevant, to identify the place of occurrence of the external cause.

External cause code reporting is voluntary (but is encouraged) when ICD-10-CM is implemented. It provides the opportunity to report enhanced detail, and could streamline the process of claims submission and payment adjudication. It may also improve the process of data collection for researchers and policy makers.
