Tricuspid valve disorders specified as rheumatic - instead, use code I07.- Tricuspid valve disorders with aortic and/or mitral valve involvement - instead, use code I08.- The ICD-10-CM Alphabetical Index links the below-listed medical terms to the ICD code I36.
Endocarditis, valve unspecified. I38 is a valid billable ICD-10 diagnosis code for Endocarditis, valve unspecified. It is found in the 2019 version of the ICD-10 Clinical Modification (CM) and can be used in all HIPAA-covered transactions from Oct 01, 2018 - Sep 30, 2019.
I38 is a billable/specific ICD-10-CM code that can be used to indicate a diagnosis for reimbursement purposes. The 2022 edition of ICD-10-CM I38 became effective on October 1, 2021. This is the American ICD-10-CM version of I38 - other international versions of ICD-10 I38 may differ. A type 1 excludes note is a pure excludes.

Infective endocarditis refers to infection in the lining of the heart, but also affects the valves. It often affects the muscles of the heart.
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common organism, which causes TVIE. However, various skin flora, as well as various Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species can infect the tricuspid valve. Duke's Criteria is used to establish the diagnosis of TVIE.
The tricuspid valve consists of three thin flaps of tissue (called cusps, or leaflets). These valve flaps open to let blood flow from the upper right chamber (right atrium) to the lower right chamber (right ventricle). The valve flaps then close tightly to prevent the blood from moving backward.
The tricuspid valve is most commonly affected (50%), whereas involvement of the mitral and aortic valves is less common (20% each). The involvement of multiple valves is common. Pulmonary valve endocarditis is rare.
The main difference between pericarditis, myocarditis, and endocarditis is the layer affected. Pericarditis is inflammation in the pericardium, myocarditis inflames the myocardium, and endocarditis means inflammation in the endocardium.
Infective endocarditis occurs most often on the left side (eg, mitral or aortic valve). About 10 to 20% of cases are right-sided (tricuspid or pulmonic valve). Intravenous drug abusers have a much higher incidence of right-sided endocarditis (about 30 to 70%).
opening is guarded by the tricuspid valve, so called because it consists of three irregularly shaped cusps, or flaps. The leaflets consist essentially of folds of endocardium (the membrane lining the heart) reinforced with a flat sheet of dense connective tissue.
The bicuspid aortic valve is an aortic valve with two cusps found between the left atrium and left ventricle. The tricuspid aortic valve is an aortic valve with three cusps found between the right atrium and right ventricle.
The normal aortic valve has three leaflets, also known as cusps. Some people can be born with one, two or even four cusps of their aortic valve. The most common of these abnormalities is an aortic valve with two cusps — thus, a bicuspid aortic valve.
The mitral valve is located on the left side of the heart, between the left atrium and the left ventricle. This valve has two leaflets that allow blood to flow from the lungs to the heart. The tricuspid valve is located on the right side of the heart, between the right atrium and the right ventricle.
The tricuspid valve is located between the right atrium and right ventricle and has a valve area of 4-6 cm 2 (see the following image and video). The valve is nearly vertical and is approximately 45° to the sagittal plane.
ICD-10 code I38 for Endocarditis, valve unspecified is a medical classification as listed by WHO under the range -Other forms of heart disease .
Use a child code to capture more detail. ICD Code I36 is a non-billable code. To code a diagnosis of this type, you must use one of the five child codes of I36 that describes the diagnosis 'nonrheumatic tricuspid valve disorders' in more detail.
The ICD code I36 is used to code Valvular heart disease. Valvular heart disease is any disease process involving one or more of the four valves of the heart (the aortic and mitral valves on the left and the pulmonary and tricuspid valves on the right). These conditions occur largely as a result of aging.
